Asterix and the Great Rescue - SEGA Master System

Asterix and Obelix are on a rescue mission… Again! This time the graphics took a drop in quality, as well as the controls. Music is more repetitive too. There’s only one song that plays during the whole game.

I have a lot of gripes with this game. Especially since I just played the first one and enjoyed it more. The controls are very slippery. Like many Master System games, you are floaty and lack traction. This is important when playing a platform game. Precision is everything. Your attacks have no range. I avoided enemies instead of taking them out. Asterix and Obelix punches are so tight, it's difficult to accurately hit any enemies without taking damage.

The level designs are fine. I feel this can be a Game Gear title, and it likely was. So, in consideration, I’ll cut it some slack. For the benefit of the doubt that this is just a Game Gear game ported to the Master System. You need to solve platform puzzles and find hidden keys to reach the end of each stage. The music that repeats endlessly does not make the gameplay enjoyable. It is difficult, not because of the level design, but because of the controls. Keep in mind I played on the Easy setting, so I only lost due to the bad controls and combat. And you only have three lives and few continues to beat the game!

I can’t recommend this game, unless you are a hardcore Asterix Fan or a Game Collector. It has too many design flaws. If this came out for Game Gear, then maybe play it on that. Otherwise, skip.
